Required upgrades to your car for adding a nitrous system.
Q: Are there any required components that I need to add to my car when adding a nitrous kit.
A: Yes and no. Although most nitrous kits come with everything you need right out of the box, there are some upgrades worth looking into to get the most out of your nitrous kit. However, in some applications these upgrades are necessary.
Q: Should I change my spark plugs?
A: Absolutely. Nitrous creates more horsepower, and just like with anything else more horsepower creates more heat. Your stock spark plugs can foul out due to excessive heat during nitrous usage. It is recommended to go to a stage colder plug for nitrous shots up to 50 horsepower and 2 steps colder for anything over a 50 shot.
Q: Do I need a new fuel pump?
A: Typically you will not need a new fuel pump when adding a nitrous system to your car. However, this is assuming you only have minor bolt-ons such as a cold air intake, catback exhaust, and/or headers. If you have added a supercharger, camshaft, turbocharger setup, etc it is recommended that you upgrade your fuel pump if you haven't already done so. It is also highly recommended to install a new fuel filter when adding nitrous to help weed out any potential problems beforehand.
Q: Do I need to run better fuel?
A: It is recommended that you use 93 octane for anything up to a 75 shot on a 4 or 6 cylinder. An 8 cylinder can withstand up to 125 horsepower on 93 octane. Any shot larger then these it is recommended that you run racing fuel. However, your car can be tuned to run larger shots safely with 93 octane. The higher octane levels can also be achieved by simultaneously running meth injection along with customized programming.
Q: Any other upgrades needed?
A: It is highly recommended to have fresh filters (air, fuel, and oil) when using nitrous. We also recommend replacing fuel pumps on higher mileage cars (75,000).
By following these basic guidelines you'll be able to get the most of your new nitrous system. Please practice safe driving habits and reserve the racing for the strip.
